The Princess loves reading, which makes me so happy because as a child I was a big reader. I remember getting lost in a book for hours (okay, I still do that!) The Princess loves A Children's Place Bookstore, and so do I! She can look at books for hours just adding to her wishlist. They also have a small area for kids to sit and play and it's just overall a very welcoming enviroment for children. They have a story time that we have not had the privilege of attending yet, but I hope we will have a chance to this summer!

The bookstore has a great selection, and if they don't have what you are looking for in stock, they are happy to order it for you. We found some great science experiment and art books to get us through the summer and have the book Candy Experiments on order. I also have found so many great books to use for the preschool. But they don't only have children's books, they also have a section for adults at the front of the store, so if you stop in, be sure to shop for yourself as well.

Pam Lewis has been the owner of the bookstore since 2003. I had the privilege of talking with the manager Kira, who has been with the bookstore since 2002. She has been so sweet and helpful. I interviewed her so that you could all get to know the bookstore a little better.

When was  the A Children's Place Bookstore established?

1974 (We should start planning a party for our 40th)!!!!!

Can you give a brief description of what A Children's Place Bookstore is all about?

We are all about customer service and personal attention. We know our books inside and out, and will always give you a stack of recommendations, whether you are shopping for someone who has read everything, or for someone who is a reluctant reader. We carry books for newborn through adult, and we are happy to special order anything in print for you within a week.
Our store is a really comfortable place to hang out for a long period of time, with large plush animals and a play area with wooden toys.
We have also worked closely with educators over the years to place small and large orders for schools, as well as bring teachers and librarians up to date on all the new books being published, since they often don't have time to do research themselves.

Do you offer any special promotions?

We have a frequent buyer program. Anyone who signs up (whether they are frequent or not) will receive a credit every fifteen books, that is equal to the average of the prices of those books. It is all done in the computer, so you don't have any cards to keep track of!

We have an ongoing 40% off sale area, with things added regularly. The biggest sale of the year will be during Fremont Fest, which takes place on August 3rd this year. We will have many more things than we normally do on sale at 40% off. Fremont Fest should not be missed, as there will be a variety of other exciting things happening all along the street that day. We often joke that we wish we could have Fremont Fest every day!

We do post things to Facebook. In fact, we are better about updating our Facebook page than we are about posting info to our website. We have a monthly E-newsletter, and you can sign up for that anytime you are in the bookstore.

Is there anything else you’d like to tell everyone?
We have storytime every Thursday, from 10:30 to 11. We have gathered such a huge crowd for this that we now have to move shelves every week to accommodate people!

There is actually a very special event happening right now, for the entire month of July. It is something we did last year, and it was so much fun that we are doing it again this year. It is called Find Waldo Local, and is sponsored by the publisher of the Where's Waldo books that many kids know and love. We are the host bookstore for Portland. There are little Waldos hiding in 25 business in Beaumont Village, and when kids find a certain number of them, they receive prizes back at the bookstore. The event ends July 31st with a big party and many more prizes, plus Waldo cake! This brings traffic into all of our neighborhood stores and restaurants, and is a great way to keep kids busy this summer. A win for everyone. Stop by any of the participating businesses to pick up a "Passport" and get started.

We have author events pretty often, and we always put up the schedule on our website and Facebook page. The biggest one we have coming up, though, will be on October 20th, at 2pm. The author of Timmy Failure, Stephan Pastis, will be in the bookstore, and we expect this to be big. We can't keep the book on the shelf, because it is hilarious, and it already has a reputation for being "the next Wimpy Kid..."
